The Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition hosted a Propane & Biodiesel school bus transportation workshop at the Fairfax County Government Center on May 23 and at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD on May 25 in coordination with Virginia Clean Cities, the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), and Maryland Clean Cities Coalition. The purpose of the event was to brief school administrators, fleet managers, and elected officials on the benefits of using propane and biodiesel fuel. Schools districts have faced many challenges with pupil transportation. Cost and diesel prices ebb and flow have made difficult to accurately budget fuel costs. In addition, health issues have been a concern for both the student passengers, drivers and the technicians who maintain them. Diesel fuel is a known carcinogen; diesel exhaust inhalation contributes to asthma, especially in children.
